Inspired by Labor Day, I decided to look a bit deeper into what’s going on behind the scenes in the fashion industry.

While I love shopping for the best deals, there are many other important factor that inform my decision. I definitely have preferred styles, cuts, colors, textures, fabrics, and other factors. But what about those factors I can't see? What about the quality and sustainability of materials? Labor practices? Wages?

The fashion industry isn’t known for being very transparent, especially when it comes to manufacturing. However, there's a growing number of companies that care about these factors, and today I want to highlight two of them, Patagonia and Everlane.

They both believe in increased transparency, quality, and sustainability in clothes manufacturing.

PATAGONIA

On Patagonia's website, they clearly state their passion for social responsibility:

Digging a bit deeper, I discovered how Patagonia has been championing this idea of social responsibility, by pioneering Fair Trade practices in the apparel and outdoor industries.

EVERLANE

Similarly, Everlane has built their company around quality materials, ethical business practices and "radical transparency":

To ensure ethical business practices they audit their factories for fair wages and reasonable work hours:

And one thing I really love about Everlane is their "Transparent Pricing", where they share their costs and profit margins. As an example, the Waffle-Knit Crew shirt pictured above:

Patagonia and Everlane are great examples, in so many ways, and because they’ve taken this initiative I believe they deserve our support. If you agree, below are a couple t-shirts you can choose from, or browse and find something you like better.
